Located along the Brandywine River, Coatesville was originally a Native American village that developed as a trading center and a market for the fur trapping industry. A prosperous farmer named Moses Coates purchased land in 1787 that now comprises the center of the town.
The completion of the Lancaster Turnpike, America’s first long-distance paved road, in 1794 made Coatesville a popular stop because of its location midway between Philadelphia and Lancaster. Jesse Kersey, the son-in-law of Moses Coates, conceived a plan to develop the area by selling frontage properties on the recently completed turnpike. The borough of Coatesville continued to expand and became the first and only city in Chester County in 1915.
The 2010 U.S. Census found that more than 13,000 people live in Coatesville, and 64.2 percent of the total households are families. Of those households, 28.3 are husband-wife families and 14.4 percent are husband-wife families with children under 18 years of age. Female householders with no husband present account for 27.7 percent of households, and 18.2 percent of such householders also have children under 18 years of age.
